”I Know We Are Lost“ is a one-week academic project that focuses on art direction, graphic design and photography to produce a magazine using Bodoni fonts. It is done with Adobe software, especially Illustrator and Photoshop.
Typography
Bodoni is the name given to the serif typefaces first designed by Giambattista Bodoni (1740–1813) in the late eighteenth century and frequently revived since. Its elegant, sophisticated appearance characterized by extreme stroke contrast and ultra-thin hairlines is timeless. But some of Bodoni font’s extreme thin strokes won’t reproduce well at smaller sizes, which can degrade their appearance and lessen readabilitynot. So I chose Bodoni 72 as the main font for my magazine because it is one of the few Bodoni versions that were designed for text usage.
Art Direction
After choosing the font, my decision was to unify the font with the style and tone of the
spread, so I intend to add some geometric and arc elements to my magazine. To this end, I developed a simple, well-defined theme to reflect the high contrast and elegance of Bodoni fonts. To help guide and consolidate my vision, my first step was to create an emotional board which can helped me assess which areas and color I could use to convey my theme.
At the same time, I need to take pictures of the inside pages of my magazine and photoshop it. I styled my model with loose clothes to create beautiful contours, and through the contrast of the article to play a visual effect, and make interesting distinctions between light and dark.
Result
The professor gave a high appraisal of the art direction, picture and font selection of my work in class. This project also inspired my interest and confidence in graphic design and art direction, more importantly, it taught me the importance of white space and lines in graphic design.
